Fascia: The Fabric of Our Form
Fascia is the bio-intelligent structure that holds us together. It can be thought of as the 'organ of organization' as it keeps our bones upright, holds our organs in place, and supports the pathway of the nerves.
On an energetic level it is the medium in which the meridian system is inlaid, thereby the vehicle for the migration of Prana through the subtle body.
According to TCM, Meridians move the qi and blood; moisten the tendons and bones; benefit the joints; connects the interior of the body. Its the channel way in which chi nourishes the organs. As practitioners we know a skillful yin practice will engender the flow of chi within the meridians. Because Meridians run through the matrix of the fascia, however, deep long held poses allow us entry into, and impact within, this connective tissue matrix.
When one part of the body moves, the whole system responds. Functionally, the only tissue that can mediate such responsiveness is the connective tissue, or fascia.
In part, yoga is a dance with the impacts of gravity as it acts on the physical body - the stress lines through the body that establish and reinforce structure. Connective tissue, with its directional orientation, creates an informational whole. It is the unifying factor in the movement system we call the body.
